toom Baumarkt GmbH
toom Baumarkt GmbH is a REWE Group company headquartered in Cologne. With over 300 DIY stores and around 18,000 employees, toom is one of the leading providers of DIY stores in Germany. The product range is tailored to experienced DIY enthusiasts and occasional do-it-yourselfers and offers comprehensive services in the areas of construction, renovation and home improvement.

The challenge
Occupational safety training - a necessary evil
The Occupational Health and Safety Act obliges toom to instruct all employees in the DIY store on occupational health and safety once a year. Previously, toom carried out this training in paper form in the sales department. On the one hand, the paper form meant a time-consuming process for the store management. Secondly, the trainees found this annual training to be slow. The result: a suboptimal learning effect.
Toom decided to digitize the occupational safety training for various reasons: Firstly, toom created an automated and standardized process, including digital proof of the training for all employees. Above all, this relieved the burden on store management. The content of the training courses also needed to be rethought. The aim was to make the previously rather monotonous topic of occupational safety more refreshing and exciting in order to increase trainee motivation and the learning effect.

The solution
Compulsory training that's fun
Toom relies on a digital learning journey for this. All new employees undergo comprehensive basic training during their induction at the DIY store. After that, all employees must refresh their training every year, for which a shortened version of the basic training was created.
The "Occupational safety at toom" learning corner is made available to all employees in the toom DIY stores via an LMS. On the one hand, learners can access the learning content at any time and complete the training conveniently. Secondly, this enables toom to provide the legally required proof that all employees in the stores have been instructed on the subject of occupational safety.
The learning journey is divided into three learning modules: Basics, Hazards and Managers. After a short introductory film, learners reach a main menu. In keeping with the gamification approach, the main menu of each module represents a small thematic world of its own, which learners work their way through in the course of the module. This form of gamification is motivating but unobtrusive - so learners can decide for themselves how intensively they want to identify with the playful approach. Within a module, learners are free to choose the order in which they complete the chapters. Only the final quiz, which must be completed, is only activated after all other modules have been completed. In the final quiz, learners must answer at least 80% of the questions correctly in order to successfully complete the module. In return, they have the opportunity to receive a tip after three failed attempts. If learners do not pass the final quiz, they have to repeat the learning module again. In total, each module takes between 15 and 40 minutes.
In the main menu, learners can uncover a puzzle piece by piece by completing individual chapters. In the four chapters, they learn who the contact persons are in the market, what they need to know about fire safety, what to do if they are injured and what the legal situation is regarding insurance in the event of accidents at work.

In this module, employees learn how to work ergonomically, what to consider when using machines and ladders in the store and how to transport and store items safely. Employees also learn how to prevent robberies and how to behave correctly in the event of a robbery. Interactions are built into the chapters to liven things up. In this way, knowledge can be imparted in a playful way and practical relevance can be established. At the end of each chapter, learners can collect a badge and fill their toolbox chapter by chapter.
In contrast to the other two modules, this module must only be completed by managers. Managers are made aware of their responsibilities with regard to occupational safety in the store. For example, managers must know and train escape routes, select fire assistants and first aiders among employees and be responsible for general safety measures in the store.

„With the digitalization of occupational safety training, we can not only provide legal proof of completed training more easily, but also support store managers with digital training by saving time with digital training and organized processes.“

Conclusion
Successful implementation and measurable successes
Toom was able to successfully roll out the learning journey in 2021 and the Learning & Development department has since been able to digitally evaluate the success of the learning journey. In sales, the digitalization of occupational safety training has proven its worth both through the time saved by store management during training and through the organized and standardized processes.
