Lufthansa Group

The Lufthansa Group is a global aviation group with more than 530 subsidiaries and over 105,000 employees. A large proportion of them work at the national airports, the so-called stations.

Occupational safety and health protection are central areas of activity for the Lufthansa Group in order to fulfill its duty of care towards its employees and to ensure business activities and reliable flight operations. Together with the Medical Service and Health Management (including psychosocial consulting), Group Occupational Safety has therefore created new web-based training for around 10,000 station employees.

With the new training, the Lufthansa Group not only wants to meet the legal requirements and provide all station employees with comprehensive training on the subject of occupational safety, but also offer them added value with tips and recommendations for their everyday professional and private lives.

The initial situation

Comprehensive revision necessary

Occupational safety on the airport premises is an omnipresent topic at an airline like Lufthansa - whether in the lounge, at the terminal or on the tarmac: station employees must therefore be trained in many different aspects of occupational safety.

To this end, Lufthansa conducts an annual comprehensive mandatory training on the topic of work safety. This training covers the topics of ergonomics, accidents, first aid, fire protection and bomb threats, which are prepared in a modular format. The web-based training courses previously used for this were visually and technically outdated and required a comprehensive overhaul. And: occupational safety should no longer be seen by station employees as compulsory theoretical training, but should become more relevant for their everyday work.

The solution

Increase relevance through practical learning content

The learning journey has been revised with regard to the core modules Ergonomics, Accident, First Aid, Fire Protection and Threat Scenarios and expanded with additional content on health and safety in the workplace. The total learning time is 60 to 90 minutes, which corresponds to just over 10 minutes per module. The short learning time per module allows for a high level of focus for learners without overwhelming them with extraneous details.

As the occupational safety training is a mandatory annual training course, the content is not entirely new for most learners. For this reason, the main focus is on repeatedly reminding them of the relevance of occupational safety in all its facets and providing specific instructions for everyday work.

The training was therefore provided with short explanatory film passages and various interactions, such as quiz questions, interactive cards or drag-and-drop tasks. In this way, learners are repeatedly encouraged to actively engage with the content.

The content always relates directly to the learner's working environment in order to create the greatest possible practical relevance. The ergonomics and health modules, for example, contain short relaxation exercises to make the content as tangible as possible for the learners and enable them to apply the knowledge immediately. In the "First Aid" module, learners can use a decision tree to exploratively explore how to proceed in certain dangerous situations. In this way, what they have learned is internalized in a practical way and can be optimally implemented in an emergency.

There are repeated testing interactions throughout the modules so that no final quiz is necessary to ensure learning success. As a result, learners are not exposed to an examination situation and yet the learning success can be increased and measured in a playful way through this interactivity, practical relevance and didactic processing.

„The occupational safety training courses are very well known among Lufthansa Group station employees. The relaunch was therefore very well received. In particular, the varied presentation with various gamification elements and the new inclusion of current topics, such as mental stress, have been well received by the approximately 10,000 station employees.“

Use of the training

Maximum distribution in the Lufthansa Group

The training was already being worked through digitally by station employees in the past. With the redesign, the training can be played out more easily on the Lufthansa Group-wide Learning Management Platform, and the annual review process for each employee will be automated and sustainably improved. From training invitations and reminders to individual learning progress reports and certificate creation - with the new training, all of this is now possible for around 10,000 relevant station employees.
