Klett und Balmer Verlag is the leading private publisher of teaching materials in Switzerland. The range includes teaching materials for learners from kindergarten to adult education, with a focus on elementary school. The publishing house has been producing textbooks and accompanying teaching materials for decades, which were delivered on CDs until 2015.
The challenge
More flexibility and efficiency
The textbooks from Klett and Balmer are supplemented by additional digital learning material, which until a few years ago was delivered on CD. These CDs were used in schools for several years. Each time the learning content was changed, all the CDs in circulation had to be re-produced and replaced. Klett and Balmer wanted to reduce these high costs and find a more modern and ecological solution. In addition, the exchange between teachers and pupils was to be promoted.
The solution
Learning software from youknow
In order to be able to create the teaching and learning content independently, the publisher introduced the Authoring Tool from youknow. For the distribution of teaching and learning content, youknow also developed a Learning Management System that meets the individual requirements of Klett and Balmer.
A wide variety of media can be processed with the Authoring Tool: whether videos, Excel or Word documents, digital books or images, Klett und Balmer has so far produced 70 learning modules with the tool. The customer-specific and responsive templates for desktop, tablet and mobile enable an optimized presentation of teaching and learning content on all end devices.
The LMS enables easy management of courses, learning modules, digital books and other media. Specific courses can be activated using user keys, which students can find in their textbooks, for example. Learners can share their successes digitally with their teachers, which helps to increase motivation.
The teaching and learning media can also be used offline via a free app. The learning statuses can be synchronized with the LMS as soon as the user is connected to the internet again.
Klett und Balmer currently registers several tens of thousands of users per day on the LMS.

Thanks to the introduction of the Authoring Tool and the LMS, it is now possible to adapt teaching and learning content quickly and without great effort and make it available to students and teachers quickly and up-to-date. Klett und Balmer was able to reduce the time and effort required to create certain content many times over. The elimination of CD production also significantly reduces costs for the publisher and makes this unecological solution a thing of the past. Instead, only user keys need to be imprinted in the teaching and learning media or on a separate license certificate.
The introduction of the LMS and digital learning modules has also improved things for students and teachers. It is no longer necessary to use a device to play a CD; instead, all learning content can be accessed online and offline via all end devices - whether on a school PC, private laptop, tablet or smartphone. In addition, the exchange between teaching staff and pupils is promoted: Teachers can view learners' entries once they have been approved and thus provide targeted assistance.
Outlook
What's next?
The introduction of the Authoring Tool and LMS is not the end of the story: together with Klett and Balmer, youknow is constantly developing the software and gradually adding further functions. For example, the learning platform is to be integrated into meinklett.ch.
