Giesecke+Devrient GmbH

Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) is a leading global SecurityTech company headquartered in Munich, Germany. With over 14,000 employees in 40 countries, G+D creates trust through integrated security technologies in three business areas: Digital Security (e.g. secure SIM cards and identity solutions), Financial Platforms (e.g. digital payment systems and the personalization of bank and credit cards) and Currency Technology (e.g. banknote production and counterfeit detection machines). The company has been a reliable partner for its customers for 170 years.

The challenge

Raising awareness

In today's work environment, diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) are not just buzzwords but essential to a modern, dynamic corporate culture

At G+D, as a globally active group, the cultural, social and legal framework conditions for the company and its workforce are extremely diverse - and so are the requirements for effective DE&I management. G+D recognized the potential of diversity early on and anchored the aspiration of an inclusive corporate culture firmly in its corporate strategy. But how do you ensure that this goal doesn't just remain a mission statement on paper, but is put into practice every day at work? The answer lies not least in a systematic and sustainable approach to further training, which involves all employees and managers. The aim was and is not only to impart knowledge, but also to promote the willingness of learners to consciously and actively contribute to creating a working environment in which everyone feels valued, treated fairly and feels that they belong.

This presented G+D with various learning challenges that needed to be met with an innovative and practical approach:

First, all employees - regardless of their level of prior knowledge - were to be brought to a common level of understanding. Another important aspect was raising awareness of unconscious bias and promoting an active approach to equal opportunities. It was also important for G+D to convey legal principles and not only pursue cognitive learning objectives, but also to address the emotional level of the learners in order to reflect on their own role in this process.

As the term DE&I implies, the specific challenges were manifold: uniting a workforce with different prior knowledge and attitudes to the topic, breaking down existing reservations and at the same time raising awareness of the importance of DE&I.

It quickly became clear that conventional e-learning would not be enough here - it had to be something special, something engaging. And that's where youknow came in.

The solution

The land of unlimited possibilities

To meet these ambitious requirements, G+D worked with youknow to develop the digital training course "Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: A journey through the land of opportunity". The aim was to create a training course that engages employees interactively and provides them with a broad basic knowledge and understanding of DE&I.

The course comprises several learning worlds, each with a thematic focus:

  • Beach of Stereotypes: This explains the meaning of the term "diversity" in the DE&I context. Learners learn about the common, conscious or unconscious, thought patterns and stereotypes that influence our decisions.
  • Cenotes of equal opportunity: In this learning world, the focus is on the term "equity" and the understanding of valuing all people with their individuality, regardless of their characteristics or life realities.
  • Island of Inclusion: This region aims to teach the importance of a working environment in which everyone feels valued and included and shows the first simple ways to implement this in everyday life.
  • Great Barrier Reef: This region shows how barriers and obstacles can be recognized and removed or overcome. It also raises awareness of discrimination and harassment.
  • Jura mountains: Provides the legal background and basic information.

Learners are guided by an interactive map through the various chapters, which are presented in a playful and motivating way. A central component is the storytelling approach: The journey through the fictitious country helps to make abstract topics vivid and tangible. This ensures that theoretical concepts can be illustrated through lively everyday scenarios and practical tips for daily use.

A particular highlight is the method in which learners are confronted with vivid examples such as the life of Freddy Mercury or the "iceberg of peculiarities". These creative elements help shed light on personal multidimensionality and the often invisible aspects of identity. Gamification elements and interactive exercises motivate the participants further and ensure a sustainable learning experience

What happens next?

International roll-out and continuous learning process

Following the successful roll-out of the e-learning program "Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: A Journey through the Land of Opportunity" in Germany, G+D is already planning the next steps to further advance its DE&I initiative.

One obvious step is the adaptation and international roll-out of the training. The focus will be on ensuring that cultural differences and local legal frameworks are taken into account in order to ensure the relevance and effectiveness of the program.

In addition, G+D plans to expand and deepen the DE&I program together with youknow. Building on the basic training, specific topics such as dealing with discrimination and harassment or unconscious bias will be covered in further e-learning modules over the next few years. These modules will be shorter and more focused in order to address specific aspects and continuously deepen knowledge.

In addition, supplementary training courses will be further expanded in G+D's internal training program. Voluntary in-depth training courses, workshops and events on DE&I topics are available to employees and promote the continuous learning process.

Conclusion

An inclusive corporate culture that is lived every day

The e-learning "Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: A journey through the land of opportunity" is a valuable tool for promoting an inclusive corporate culture at G+D. The creative and interactive approach succeeds in imparting essential knowledge on DE&I while inspiring and motivating employees to actively participate in creating a respectful work environment.

The training not only are closes knowledge gaps but also reduces existing reservations. The training shows that diversity, equity and inclusion are not just theoretical concepts, but have practical, everyday relevance and a positive impact on working life. The storytelling and gamification elements used ensure an intensive and sustainable learning experience that goes beyond traditional e-learning formats. The high level of acceptance and positive feedback from participants confirms that the training offers real added value.

With this training, G+D has created an excellent basis for continuing the journey in the DE&I sector and implementing the knowledge gained in future initiatives. The planned additional modules and the international roll-out of the program will further strengthen this positive momentum and deepen the DE&I culture on a global level.

This training is an excellent example of how companies can support and drive sustainable cultural change through targeted training and awareness-raising.

eLearning Award 2025: Excellent storytelling

The training received the eLearning Journal Award 2025. The jury emphasized how the training goes far beyond the mere transfer of knowledge through innovative methods such as gamification, interactive scenarios and vivid visualizations. It promotes a deeper identification of employees with DE&I topics, reduces reservations and initiates a constructive dialog about diversity. This outstanding achievement in the "Storytelling" category with a focus on "Diversity & Equal Opportunities" impressively demonstrates how digital learning formats can bring about lasting change in corporate culture.
