From theory to practice: getting started with e-learning

The Emmi Group, headquartered in Lucerne, can look back on over 100 years of company history. What began in 1907 as the "Central Swiss Milk Association Lucerne" has developed into an internationally active company with over 8,000 employees. The food group now produces and sells its dairy products in 15 countries. In order to be able to produce training in-house in the future, the food group turned to youknow for strategic advice.

The challenge

Producing digital training in-house

The international nature of the Emmi Group naturally poses logistical challenges when it comes to training - face-to-face training for departments across locations is associated with high costs and long downtimes. It therefore comes as no surprise that Emmi's HR department, which is responsible in particular for the design and delivery of management training, has long been pursuing the goal of making training increasingly digital. In order to be less dependent on external content providers, the Emmi Group wants to become more self-sufficient and in future have all steps in its own hands, from defining learning objectives to creating scripts.

No easy task: after the employees in the HR Development department had already acquired extensive theoretical knowledge and a first pilot project was very promising, all that was needed was an initial spark to get started with practical implementation.

The solution

Strategy consulting from youknow

Essentially, the solution was to develop meaningful formats and processes that would enable the efficient production of standardized and didactically meaningful learning content in the first place. This is where youknow was able to help the food company with a strategy consulting.

Great emphasis was placed on practical relevance. The linchpin was therefore a two-day workshop under the motto "From the topic to the learning objectives to the script". HR learned about tools that they can use throughout the entire process - from identifying learning needs to defining learning objectives and creating scripts. The tools were tried out directly in the Workshop using an example topic.

For example, the "Project Setup" was presented, a tool with which the HR department can structure all the parameters of a training project (e.g. the responsibilities of the individual project participants) in advance in order to ensure that the project runs smoothly.

Before the Workshop, HR determined which learning formats should be used in the future. On this basis, youknow defined appropriate comparison criteria and additional information and transferred these into so-called format profiles. The profiles show the advantages and disadvantages of the various learning formats (e.g. webinars, virtual classrooms, etc.) and their suitability for the subject areas possible at Emmi. In future, the fact sheets will provide employees with an argumentation and decision-making aid when selecting the right digital training format for a specific challenge.

Target achievement and next steps

Off to practice

The HR Development department now wants to implement its first two training courses. The knowledge transfer of the trained employees can thus take place directly on the basis of these two projects. We will soon see how the internally designed formats are received by managers.
