The challenge
How to get the whole of Austria to save energy?
An explainer video can do many things. But getting an entire nation - 9 million people - to save energy? E-Control wants to contribute to this. As the supervisory and regulatory authority for the Austrian electricity and gas market, one of its tasks is to educate citizens about efficient energy use. And our explainer videos are designed to help with this.
The solution
E-Control and youknow find together
By chance, E-Control came across an advertisement for our workshop on storytelling. Our marketing team must have done something right, because a short time later we were able to welcome the E-Controllers to our workshop. There they learned tips on explaining and telling stories.
The core element of every story: the main character. But who could be the main character in explainer videos about saving energy? An electric eel? A petrol pump? Almost. On this day, the idea of the Wagner family was born, which would later be brought to life in films. And so the foundation stone for the explainer video series was laid.
The result
The Wagner family
A family needs energy. Every day. Sometimes even several times. And just like our target group, a family is made up of very different types. A perfect approach, therefore, to reflect all energy-related needs in different characters: In our Wagner family, we have daughter Laura, who is studying eco-energy technology and wants to save energy. And dad Bernd, who is worried about high investments. Mom Viktoria travels a lot by car, son Max likes technology and grandma Helga just loves nature.
It's easier to build a relationship with people than with pure facts. Packaged in little everyday stories, they arouse emotions and stay in the memory longer. Step by step, the Wagners are saving their way into Austrian hearts. And because saving energy is of course a heroic act, the Wagners - spoiler alert - become genuine superheroes themselves towards the end of the film series. What more could you want?
A theme for every movie
Of course, it takes time to get to know a family. That's why, in the first of five explainer videos, we first introduce the Wagners - with all their wishes, fears and reservations. Their dream is to be able to pay for a nice hotel vacation with the money they save on electricity, fuel, heating gas and oil. Will they make it? They certainly don't do badly: in the second movie, dad Bernd saves a lot on heating costs. Then son Max switches off all the power guzzlers. In movie four, mom Viktoria makes the fuel bill shrink. Last but not least, the Wagners learn how to generate their own electricity in the fifth movie.
