Deutsche Bahn
Deutsche Bahn AG is an international mobility and transportation group, wholly owned by the Federal Republic of Germany. With over 335,000 employees, DB AG ranks 6th in Germany in terms of the number of employees.
DB Training, Learning & Consulting (DB Training for short), the largest training service provider in the Group, is responsible for the further training and qualification of employees. Its offering includes training courses, seminars and other qualification and consulting services on all topics relating to rail operations, infrastructure, train drivers and vehicle technology. In addition, they train people in the most important business skills in everyday working life for operational staff through to office-based employees. The digital offerings are delivered via the "DB Learning World " platform, which has over 250,000 active users.
The initial situation
Expansion of digital learning opportunities
Over 335,000 employees - with this impressive number, it is not surprising that the amount of content in the DB Learning World is gigantic, as it has to provide the most diverse job profiles with the appropriate topics. Nevertheless, DB Training is committed to constantly expanding the selection of digital learning opportunities.
It was with this in mind that those responsible for the "Working methods and personal skills" seminar portfolio approached youknow. The aim was to have new learning videos created for the topics "Communication" and "Trainer qualification". As a central lever for good cooperation in everyday working life, the topic of communication plays a particularly important role in DB Training's offerings. Communication is highly relevant in customer contact with travelers as well as in collegial interaction. By further developing skills with the help of appropriate training, the positive effect is to be continuously improved.
The requested learning videos are to be used both as a stand-alone solution and in blended learning offers and e.g. to prepare for and follow up on face-to-face seminars. The content requirements included various communication models, professional networking and dealing with difficult questions.
The solution
Talking Head Videos
The product managers at DB Training were not sure about the final format of the learning videos. However, during the consultation with youknow, Talking Head Videos quickly emerged as a suitable medium for the planned topics.
Talking head videos, i.e. videos in which a person speaks directly into the camera and thus also directly to the learners, can convey messages in a pragmatic, sustainable and likeable way. Above all, however, they impress with their personal approach to the learner - which was particularly suitable for the planned communication topics. In addition, talking head videos are relatively cheap and quick to produce - two further factors that made the format convincing.
The result
Individual films
After the project was commissioned, the final titles and themes for the ten films were developed together with the product managers at DB Training:
- The Pedagogical Charter
- Non-violent communication
- Giving and receiving feedback
- The sender-receiver model
- Texting professionally
- The 4-page model
- The Johari window
- Dealing with difficult questions with confidence
- Active listening
- The iceberg model
In a production period of only approx. 2 months, the ten videos with a total duration of approx. 30 minutes were designed and produced. In addition to the actual, personal address by the presenter, texts and graphic inserts were added at image level to support the spoken word and thus contribute to an easy understanding of the content. This combination makes it possible to address all learners individually.
Conclusion
Useful addition to blended learning offers
The Talking Head videos are now available to DB employees, but also to external target groups, in the DB Learning World. The feedback so far underlines the positive effect - especially as a supplement to the blended learning offers. The videos will therefore help learners to develop their personal, communicative skills.

Kerstin Christmann
Senior Project/Product Manager
Deutsche Bahn
„We used talking head videos for the implemented topics, as the personal approach to learners is more personal and emotionalizing than comparable formats, especially when it comes to communication topics. The combination of a personal approach and complementary visualizations that visually anchor the content are particularly suitable for the focused topics.“
